Welcome to Bankruptcy.Blog! (Updated 2025)

With the new year underway, it is time for a fresh start. For many, that fresh start means escaping the debt and emerging ready for a stable financial future. That is the singular mission of the Bankruptcy.Blog: to serve as your authoritative, practical guide through the financial maze that debt creates.

The Real Cost of Debt: Why This Blog Exists

As a professor specializing in this field, I know the academic side of bankruptcy, but as a former practitioner, I know the human cost. While debt is a financial problem, its roots are often medical and personal, and the fallout is often emotional.

Consider the top three reasons people are forced to consider bankruptcy:

  1. Medical Bills and Health-Related Issues.
  2. Job Loss or Income Disruption.
  3. Divorce (where the stress of debt and finances often becomes too much).

Unfortunately, the side effects are even uglier than divorce. When researching the connection between financial stress and mental health, I saw firsthand the devastating spike in suicides during the 2007–2009 mortgage foreclosure crisis, where several of my own clients tragically contemplated or committed suicide. Financial uncertainty leads to stress, and stress can be deadly.

My goal is to confront this taboo subject head-on and ensure you understand that you are not alone in this journey.

The Proof of Authority

I was once asked in an interview with a law school why I wasn’t published. My focus was on running a law practice and devoting every minute to my clients, not the answer one of the interviewers wanted to hear. However, I took the challenge to prove a point: that a commitment to your passion is more powerful than any obstacle.

Moving Forward: Your Journey to Financial Freedom

This blog won’t focus exclusively on bankruptcy because it is not always the answer. Sometimes, solutions like refinancing, debt negotiation, or expense reduction are a better fit. The key is the accomplishment itself: taking the first step toward financial freedom.

Everyone has had to deal with debt at one point, including me. There is strength in numbers, and whether it is filing for bankruptcy or simply adjusting a budget, there are endless success stories. There is no reason why you cannot be the next.
