Big Lots Chapter 11 Bankruptcy: What You Need to Know

Unfortunately, Big Lots has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It is expected that more than 250 locations will close before January 2025. Currently, almost 300 stores have begun to shut down.

By the Numbers

• Big Lots has almost 1,400 locations in forty-eight states. Only Alaska and Hawaii don’t have any stores
• Big Lots employs approximately 9,600 full-time employees and 18,100 part-time employees.

The Good News for Big Lots Bankruptcy

Because Big Lots filed for Chapter 11, that means it intends to keep its business open. This is different from a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which would mean all assets are liquidated and are permanently closed.

Also, Big Lots has already sold its company to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management for about $760 million based on the bankruptcy filing. This is good news, as this is known as a “prepackaged” bankruptcy. Basically, their debts and loans are negotiated beforehand, and once creditors are on the same page, the bankruptcy petition is filed.

This eliminates the need for litigation and results in judges approving the bankruptcy as everything has been done in advance. That’s why it’s common to hear a company went into bankruptcy, and a few days later, they are out of bankruptcy.

Update: With hundreds of locations closing, the good news is that discount grocery store Aldi is snatching up the Big Lots locations per Yahoo Finance.
