Welcome to Bankruptcy.blog: Navigating Your Path to Financial Relief

Welcome to the first video post on Bankruptcy.blog. My goal is to bridge the gap between complex legal issues and the real-world scenarios you face when considering a fresh start. Whether you are a debtor looking for a way out of debt or a legal studies student using my textbook, this platform is designed for you.

By Alexander Hernandez, J.D., Professor, and Author of Consumer Bankruptcy Law (Routledge).

What Will Bankruptcy.blog Cover?

Understanding Chapter 7 and 13 Bankruptcy

Rather than just providing a broad overview of “bankruptcy,” this blog focuses on the technical and practical differences between Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. I dive deep into the issues that help you identify which path aligns with your financial goals.

Bankruptcy is never just about one thing; it’s a web of financial challenges. In upcoming posts and videos, I will dive deep into:

  • Real-World News: Breaking down how recent legal rulings and legislation affect your pocket.
  • The Big Five: Strategic advice for managing Credit Cards, Student Loans, Car Loans, and Mortgages within a bankruptcy filing.

Tools for Your Case

Having the right information is a necessity. To help you get started, I am building out dedicated resource pages, including:

  • Local Bankruptcy Court Directory: Find your local court’s contact information here.
  • Trustee Contact Information: A comprehensive list of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 trustees.
  • State-Specific Guides: Articles detailing your state’s exemption limits to help you understand which of your assets are protected.
  • How-to File for Bankruptcy: This blog wouldn’t be complete without a section explaining the different parts of the bankruptcy petition. In my blog and video series, I review the different parts of the bankruptcy petition.

For Students and Professionals

If you are a paralegal or legal studies student using my Routledge textbook, look for the “Deep Dive” video series. These videos offer a different perspective on the chapters you’re reading and provide practical software walk-throughs.

About Alex Hernandez

Before founding Bankruptcy.blog, I began practicing law in 1999 after graduating from Nova Southeastern School of Law. I am licensed in Florida and the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida for bankruptcy. My journey has taken me from appearing on Telemundo Miami and hosting weekend radio shows to serving as a legal writer for Upsolve.org.

As a professor, I’ve had the privilege of developing bankruptcy and family law courses for Purdue Global Law School and instructing the paralegal program at the University of California at Riverside, where I received the Outstanding Instruction Award. My textbook, Consumer Bankruptcy Law, is published by Routledge.

When I’m not writing or teaching, you can find me working on my golf game, exercising on my Echelon, or camping with my wife and pets. My latest obsession? Meadowscaping.

Professor Hernandez is an attorney specializing in consumer finance and debt relief. He is the published author of Consumer Bankruptcy Law (Routledge Publishing) and teaches law and finance courses in both English and Spanish for an international university.
