How to Be the Ideal Bankruptcy Client: Key Insights

Today’s blog post and podcast focus on what bankruptcy lawyers want in having the perfect bankruptcy client. Let’s review important issues such as honesty, communication, and realistic expectations. You can listen to the full podcast below.

Honesty is the Best Policy

What we learned in kindergarten still applies today. Disclose everything to your bankruptcy lawyer! Be upfront about your financial situation, including income, expenses, and debts. If there were any transfers of assets or even sold, your lawyer has to know.

For example, if your financial situation has changed, whether there has been an increase in income or a loss, tell your lawyer.

Communication is the Key with Your Bankruptcy Lawyer

Filing for bankruptcy is stressful. Before that, it was the endless creditor calls. So this is ongoing stress dating back for some time. Now that you have handed over your hard-earned money to your bankruptcy attorney, it’s essential to maintain regular contact, but don’t go overboard.

When you communicate with your bankruptcy attorney, what is the preferred method of communication? A lengthy text message should be avoided. That is better for an email for an in-office or phone consultation.

Also, while technology has made waiting an impossibility, be realistic about communicating with your bankruptcy lawyer. Our workloads tend to be high, and to be honest, sometimes clients fail to understand we also have a personal life, meaning calls way past business hours.

As lawyers, we could have hearings or trials all week. By the time we get back to the office, we might have to see new clients and speak with staff, and by then, the day is over. If possible, speak with the staff, and if the lawyer is non-responsive after a while, have a follow-up to ensure all is well.

Google Law

Always depend on a lawyer for accurate advice. Avoid self-legal diagnosis. Assuming it’s correct, the information online can’t be applied across the board to everyone and in every situation.
