When the economic winds shift daily, what’s the real cost to American businesses? We’re seeing it unfold at At Home, the latest casualty in a chaotic tariff war. With 250 locations nationwide, At Home’s CEO, Brad Weston, made clear that tariffs are responsible as the supply chain is threatened.
“We are operating against the backdrop of an increasingly dynamic and rapidly evolving trade environment as we navigate the impact of tariffs,” Weston said in Monday’s statement. “The steps we are taking today to fully de-lever our balance sheet will improve our ability to compete in the marketplace in the face of continued volatility and increase the resilience of our business for the long term.”
At Home has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware, so they are trying to restructure their debt. The Wall Street Journal reported that twenty locations may be shut down immediately because of the bankruptcy filing.
The Real Cost of Economic Chaos: Tariffs and Uncertainty
I’ve argued the position since President Trump took office that not only would tariffs increase bankruptcies for consumers and businesses, but that the uncertainty would also be damaging economically. I compared it to a toxic relationship.
In a toxic relationship, the uncertainty and fear cause people to hold back. You can’t move forward. The same applies to consumers when they don’t know what the future holds economically, and to businesses. You can’t run a business successfully when there’s uncertainty at every turn.
If you wake up today to tariffs at 30%, next week 145%, then it goes to 50%, to then have tariffs delayed, that creates economic havoc. At Home’s struggles, unfortunately, reinforce a point I’ve consistently made… “chaos creates political instability, which leads to financial instability.”
As additional information becomes available, I will update this post, including the store locations that will be closed.
