Claire’s and Icing Store Closures Hit Florida Malls

As part of its second bankruptcy filing, Claire’s Holdings LLC is closing hundreds of locations throughout the United States. Fifteen locations in Florida are closing, which affects both Claire’s, the tween-favorite accessories chain, and its sister brand, Icing, which caters to a slightly older crowd.

Why the Closures?

Claire’s cited a perfect storm of economic pressures that led to its bankruptcy filing, starting with the tariffs, since most of their products are Chinese imports, inflation and rising interest rates, shifting consumer behavior toward fast-fashion platforms like Shein and Temu, and declining mall traffic and high lease obligations.

What’s next for Claire’s? While some Florida locations will remain open for now, including Aventura, Dadeland, and Dolphin Mall, others may follow. Being familiar with those areas and even living across the street from Dadeland in Dadeland towers, I know those locations to be high-traffic areas.

Claire’s was sold to private equity firm Ames Watson for $104 million, which plans to downsize. As more information becomes available or there are additional Claire’s closings in Florida, this post will be updated.
