District of New Mexico Bankruptcy Trustee Directory (2026)
The District of New Mexico operates as a single bankruptcy district covering the entire state. Bankruptcy cases are primarily handled through the Albuquerque and Las Cruces divisions.
As with other federal jurisdictions, there is a clear distinction between the private trustees who manage individual cases and the Office of the U.S. Trustee (UST), which acts as the “watchdog” for the Department of Justice.
By Alexander Hernandez, J.D., Professor, and Author of Consumer Bankruptcy Law (Routledge).
Office of the U.S. Trustee (UST)
New Mexico falls under Region 20 of the U.S. Trustee Program, which also includes Kansas and Oklahoma. The regional office is based in Wichita, but the local New Mexico office is located in Albuquerque:
- Location: 421 Gold Avenue SW, Suite 312, Albuquerque, NM 87102
- Phone: (505) 248-6544
- Assistant U.S. Trustee: Jaime A. Peña
The U.S. Trustee oversees the bankruptcy filing system. For example, cases involving bankruptcy fraud.
The New Mexico Bankruptcy Trustee
A Bankruptcy Trustee is a private individual appointed to administer your estate. Their role depends on which chapter in bankruptcy was filed.
Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustees
In New Mexico, Chapter 7 trustees are responsible for reviewing your petition, conducting the 341 Meeting of Creditors, and determining if there are non-exempt assets to liquidate for the benefit of creditors.
| Trustee Name | Office Address | Phone Number |
| Edward Mazel | 1122 Central Ave SW, Suite 1, Albuquerque, NM 87102 | (505) 433-3011 |
| Clarke C. Coll | P.O. Box 2288, Roswell, NM 88202 | (575) 625-0441 |
| Philip J. Montoya | P.O. Box 159, Albuquerque, NM 87103 | (505) 244-1152 |
| Tiffany M. Cornejo | 6100 Uptown Blvd. NE, Suite 500, Albuquerque, NM 87110 | (505) 346-6910 |
Chapter 13 Standing Trustee
Chapter 13 is known as a “wage earner’s” plan since income is required to qualify, unlike Chapter 7, where sometimes it’s best to file while unemployed, since there would be no Means Test issues. Chapter 13 is commonly filed when income is too high due to the Means Test, to keep non-exempt assets, or to catch up on missed payments on secured debt like a car loan or mortgage.
In New Mexico, a single standing trustee handles the collection and distribution of plan payments for the entire state.
| District | Trustee Name | Office Address | Phone Number |
| New Mexico | Tiffany M. Cornejo | 6100 Uptown Blvd. NE, Suite 500, Albuquerque, NM 87110 | (505) 346-6910 |
Professor’s Note
As I discuss in my textbook, Consumer Bankruptcy Law, the trustee is a fiduciary for your creditors. While New Mexico trustees are known for being professional, their legal and ethical obligation is to protect the value of the bankruptcy estate. They are not your advocate, so keep that in mind if you are representing yourself and communicating with their office.
The Bankruptcy Trustee Duties Comparing Chapters 7 and 13
| Bankruptcy Chapter | Trustee Duties |
| Chapter 7 (Liquidation) | Oversight and Liquidation: Review the petition, conduct the 341 Meeting, locate and liquidate non-exempt assets, and distribute proceeds to creditors. |
| Chapter 13 (Reorganization) | Plan Oversight and Payment Processing: Performs Chapter 7 review duties and administers the Repayment Plan by collecting and distributing monthly payments. Monitors debtor compliance over the 3-to-5-year plan term. |
341 Meeting Update (2026)
In the District of New Mexico, most 341 Meetings are currently held via Zoom or telephonic appearance.
ID Requirements: You must provide a copy of your photo ID and Social Security card to the trustee prior to the meeting. Make sure to confirm how the trustee requires your identification to be provided.
Documentation: Trustees in this district are strict about the “7-day rule,” which requires that tax returns and pay stubs be uploaded to their portals at least 7 days before the hearing.
The Professor’s Tip: If you are filing Chapter 13, ensure your first payment is made to the Albuquerque lockbox (or via the TFS Bill Pay system) on time. Otherwise, if your payment was due before the 341 Meeting, Trustee Tiffany Cornejo will seek a dismissal.
Also, while it’s common to have several confirmation hearings, make sure your payments have been made prior to the hearing so that the case can be confirmed. If not, once your case is dismissed, your bankruptcy lawyer will have to file a motion to set aside that dismissal and will charge additional fees for doing so.
